About East Midlands (EMA) Airport

East Midlands Airport (EMA) is located in the East Midlands of England, at Castle Donington in North West Leicestershire. Nearby cities include Derby, 8.1 miles Southeast, Leicester and Nottingham. In 2010 the passenger number per year was 4.1 million, making it the 12th busiest airport in UK, while for freight traffic it was the second busiest in UK.

Originally, the airport was a Royal Air Force station, and in the 1960s it was renamed East Midlands Airport, the name reflecting the area it served; in 1965 it opened for passenger traffic. At first, the airfield had basic facilities but the increasing volume of cargo and passenger traffic required further developments and in the 1970s and 1980s a new freight complex was built and the runway and the terminal were extended. In 1993 it became the first major regional airport in the UK to be privatised. The new owner invested in the airport and extended the runway to allow long haul flights and constructed an air traffic control tower. In 2001 the airport was sold to Manchester Airports Group. Due to overcrowding of the terminal building the facilities have been further remodeled and extended.

East Midlands Airport is a hub for low cost airlines like Bimbaby and Ryanair and a major base for Thomson Airways and Thomas Cook; it is also the maintenance base of BMI. In the North West side of the airport there is the East Midlands Aeropark having a large number of inactive aircraft on public display. As such, East Midlands (EMA) Airport Hotels are delighted to invite you to spend a lovely trip in East Midlands, while we will be taking care of your accommodation.
